About Entebbe

Entebbe is a city in Uganda situated in the Wakiso district, almost 34 kilometres from the capital city, Kampala. Located on a peninsula of Lake Victoria, Entebbe was once the capital of Uganda where all the government activities took place. This city is still the residential location and office of the President of Uganda.

Derived from the Luganda Language, Entebbe means a seat or chair. It is a hub of various biomedical research centres such as Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI), the UK Medical Research Center Laboratories (MRC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the US Center for Disease Control (CDC). UVRI conducts various researches to find cures related to diseases like HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, and helminth.

Apart from these research centres, Entebbe has a stunning botanical garden, the Ngamba Chimpanzee Island, and Zika Forest. The city has an amazing and relaxing atmosphere. You can chill at Lake Victoria with your loved ones, go fishing or just relax at the beach.

Population

According to the census of 2014, the overall population of Uganda was 36,900,000. Out of this, the total population of Entebbe alone was 69,958. 

History

At Entebbe, the Baganda chief sat to dispute any judicial and legal matters. In 1893, it was the administrative and commercial center for British Colonial. In 1952, Queen Elizabeth II took flight from Entebbe International Airport when she got the news about her father’s death.  

This Airport of Entebbe was the spot where the rescue operation took place by the units of the Israeli Army and freed over 100 hostages when Palestinian and West German militants hijacked a plan. This made the airport quite famous. 

Weather

The climate of Entebbe falls under tropical rainforest climate (Af) as per the Koppen climate classification. Entebbe experiences two wet seasons. The first one during March, April, and May whereas the second rains fall in October and November. 

The dry and warm months are January, February, July, and August. January and February are the hottest months as the temperature is high with almost no rainfall whereas July and August are the warmest months of the year.

Best Time to Visit

December to February: 

These are the dry and hot months of the year. The dry period starts from mid-December with occasional rainfall. However, during January and February, there is no rainfall and the weather is comfortably hot. It is the best time to visit and explore the city with family or friends. These are the busiest months for tourism.

March to May:

These are the wettest months of the year with high rainfall. You cannot enjoy land and water activities, as they are not available due to heavy rain. The drainage facilities are very limited and hence, some streets may get flooded. The tourism during these months is much lower. 

June to August: 

The weather during these months is warm and cold. It is the perfect time to visit Entebbe. The sky is clear with more sunshine. You will spot many wildlife and beautiful views in the parks. This is the busiest period for tourism and hence, the lodging and other facilities are expensive.

September to November: 

These months are the combination of the dry and wet seasons. Some days are dry with no rainfall and sunny sky whereas some are rainy days. However, it is a good time to visit this city. It is the mid-peak season for tourism.

Lake Victoria:

Botanical Gardens:

Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC):

You will find some of the rare and unique animals of Uganda at UWEC. They work at educating people about the importance of wild animals. 

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary:

It is a 100-acre island, which is home to 40 rescued chimpanzees. You can reach this island either by boat or by public transport. Flights are also available from Entebbe International Airport to the sanctuary. 

Entebbe Markets:

Make sure you visit the main markets of Entebbe to learn more about the city and its people. Go shopping and do not forget to taste the delicious local food at the restaurant.

The closest airport to Entebbe is the Entebbe International Airport (EBB) and is the only international airport in the country, Uganda. The approximate distance of the airport from the city is 4.3 kilometers only. It is 34.2 kilometers southwest of Kampala, the capital city. 

Bukoba Airport (104.9 miles / 168.9 kilometers), Soroti Airport (140.1 miles / 225.4 kilometers), and Musoma Airport (140.3 miles / 225.7 kilometers) are some of the other nearby airports to Entebbe. You can reach Entebbe safely and comfortably with Ethiopian Airlines.
