About Accra

In 1957 Ghana got its independence from the United Kingdom and Accra is the national capital of Ghana. English is the official language here, but the major population of Accra is proficient in at least four languages. It is one of the most diverse cities and you will find so many ethnic communities when you visit here.

The word Accra is derived from Nkran from the Akan language and it means “ants”, specifically soldier ants. It was named so because of the numerous anthills seen in the countryside of Accra.
