About Hamburg

Hamburg is a major port city in northern Germany, with a promenade called Jungfernstieg that links the Neustadt (new town) with the Altstadt (old town). The maritime city is surrounded by water with rivers and lakes never far away. In fact, there are over 2,000 bridges in the city, so you will probably have a massive collection of bridge photos to remind you of your Hamburg vacation.

There is a lot to see and do in Hamburg and it has a reputation as one of the best party places in all of Europe. In the daytime, there are art galleries, historic sites, shopping and tourist attractions to explore. You will always be busy in Hamburg and spare a week to see this vibrant city if you can.

German is the official language spoken, but many people also speak English.

Best Time to Visit

Hamburg is beautiful in every season, however, the best time to visit Hamburg is from May to September when high temperatures and long sunny days make it ideal for sightseeing. Room rates are higher than other times of the year and there are more crowds, so consider spring or autumn or even winter if you like cooler climates.

Keep this in mind when you book your flight to Hamburg from Toronto or other major airports. There are lots of great Air Canada flights to the German city of Hamburg.

Where To Stay

From chic Hamburg hotels, funky guesthouses, and homely bed and breakfasts, travelers have many accommodation options to choose from.

Renaissance Hamburg Hotel is in the historic Broscheks building near Hamburg Harbour and the Kunsthalle Hamburg Art Museum. Rooms are modern and stylish with everything you might need.

In the bustling heart of Hamburg, accommodation at Henri Hotel, offers the perfect oasis of luxury after a busy day of sightseeing. Spacious rooms are modern with the latest technology and facilities with studios and suites to choose from. The boutique hotel is centrally located.

Things to Do

The area around the Jungfernstieg is scenic and you can take a nice walk along the shores of the Binnenalster, an artificial lake that flows into the River Alster. You can walk along to the Town Hall, which is a stunning example of Neo-Renaissance architecture.

With many churches in town, you probably won’t have time to see them all. St. Michael’s Church which the locals simply call Michael, is one not to miss. It has an impressive 132-meter tall church tower with an observation deck to see 360-degree views of the city. The church interior is equally awe-inspiring with ancient religious statues, huge white archways and gold details.

If you are in town on a Sunday and can get up early, the Hamburg Fish Market is an interesting sight as the sellers and buyers work using loud theatrics. You can buy the freshest fish, seafood, fruit and vegetables. It has been operating since 1703 and by 9:30 am it is all over for the day. Nearby there are many cafes and traditional pubs serving breakfast and coffee, which will be needed after your early start to the day.

Take a harbour cruise from the Landungsbrücken to see the city from the water. The day and night atmosphere is totally different, and both experiences are enjoyable with many photo opportunities

Train enthusiasts will amaze at Miniatur Wunderland, a model railway and miniature airport attraction that is the largest of its kind globally. Adults and kids will love seeing this mind-blowing creation that keeps growing.

When you need to get back to nature, the Planten un Blomen is an urban park covering 47 hectares of pristine flower beds, theme gardens, herb gardens, ponds and spacious lawns. In summer, the main lake is lit up with a spectacular light show to classical music. Another lovely park is Stadpartk which is great if you are traveling with children as there are playgrounds and plenty of shade.

For an exciting night out, the Hamburg Dungeon involves an interactive actor-led experience through Hamburg’s dark history. A spooky and fun way to take a history lesson during your vacation.

For the best currywurst in town, we hear it’s served up at Lütt’n Grill. You can choose to have fries or noodles with your sausage in the most delicious curry sauce. After your meal in Schanzen there are many bars to try, or you might be so full you need to go back for a rest at your hotel.
