About Bordeaux

Bordeaux is a small city built on the river Garonne near the Atlantic Ocean. It is the ultimate destination for wine lovers and home to award-winning wineries and elegant chateaus. Bordeaux is also the second most popular tourist destination in France and is fairly close to the border of Spain.

Weather & Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Bordeaux is from June and August. For fewer crowds and lower room rates, spring and autumn are lovely. It’s worth noting many wineries are closed to visitors in the fall from September as they are harvesting the grapes. To avoid this time if wine and cellar tours are going to be a highlight of your trip.

Book your flight to Bordeaux–Mérignac Airport for your preferred month to make the most of your trip. There are many great Air Canada and Air France flights to Europe, so it’s easy to get to Bordeaux.

Where To Stay

There are so many wonderful accommodation options in Bordeaux, including lovely guesthouses, luxury hotels, charming bed and breakfasts, boutique hotels, grand mansions, and posh residences. As the French always do everything in style, the accommodation choices are all stunning. It’s not easy to choose with all these great places. Here are three properties we find inspiring.

Villa Reale is a 5-star property dating back to 1754. The boutique hotel with apartments is decorated in a style that blends modern design with French 18th-century style. The sauna is a welcome luxury, and so is the location, which is on the Place du Parlement (Parliament Square) in the Quartier Saint-Pierre.

Undo Hotel is inside a gorgeous 19th-century mansion with designer furnishings and luxury decorations in all the rooms and suites. Elegance, sophistication and a dash of quirkiness come with a Yndo booking and the attentive staff will take care of your every need.

Say bonjour to a classical hotel in an 18th-century building. This is Hotel de Size with 55 spacious rooms and a restaurant, bar and cigar lounge for guests to relax. A spa, hot tub, and sauna are perfect after a long day of sightseeing.

Things To See & Do

When you arrive, buy the Bordeaux Metropole City Pass, which gives you free entry to many museums, tourist attractions, and public transportation.

A trip to Bordeaux wouldn’t be complete without a wine tour. The famous winemaking region is one of the best places in Europe to discover more about wine. Book a tour that includes a visit to a chateau, lunch, wine tasting and many stop by charming French villages and scenic rural areas along the way.

When it comes to museums, Bordeaux has a lot to choose from, and there is even a wine museum. La Cité du Vin is a modern interactive wine museum in a building designed in the shape of a wine decanter. The innovative design is just the start of the fun. Inside, you can learn about wine making through exhibits and events and sample fine wines. The Natural History Museum, Contemporary Art Museum, Science Museum and Maritime Museum which are all fascinating to visit.

Place de la Bourse was designed by Louis XV’s preferred architect, Jacques Gabriel. The spacious area with fountains and interesting architectural details is a favourite hangout spot for locals and tourists. A large pool of water acts as a mirror that reflects Place de la Bourse and makes a nice photo.

Qais de Bordeaux is a beautiful waterfront promenade with flower gardens, lawns, ancient buildings and wonderful views. With a wide path, it makes a nice area to walk or cycle.

Place de la Victoire is where you’ll find the Roman victory arch made from bronze and red Languedoc marble. The first monument in Bordeaux was created to recognize viticulture and winemaking, which put Bordeaux so firmly on the tourist map.

Go shopping along the Rue Sainte Catherine, which is over a kilometre of shopping. The pedestrian street is the best place to pick up souvenirs. On Sunday, the Marché des Qais Market along the Garonne River is the place for quality food, including fruits, vegetables, cheese, seafood and meat.

Jardin Public is a beautiful public park with many scenic spots for a picnic. Spend the whole afternoon watching and walking around the grounds admiring the flowers and nature.
