History

Captain Arthur Phillip and the First Fleet sighted Sydney in January 1788. Sydney is named after Lord Sydney, who was a British home secretary. It is said that Sydney is the finest harbour in the world. Around 50,000 years ago around 1500 Aboriginals lived on the foreshore before Phillip chose the Sydney Cove as Australia’s primary penal colony.

After the Rum rebellion, the governor named Lachlan Macquarie was appointed to restore orders and by 1830, Sydney was the busiest commercial seaport and exporter of wool to Europe. After convict transportation in 1840 and gold fever in 1850, the population of Sydney tripled. Now, immigrants have transformed it into a diverse city.
