Russia’s resort city of Sochi is more than exotic beaches. It also has a lush national park, scenic mountains, impressive 20th-century neoclassical buildings and lots of Russian culture. As a vacation spot, it makes an exciting stay with plenty to entertain every kind of traveler. It’s no wonder Sochi is becoming a more popular destination with Russian and international tourists, including celebrities.

Weather & Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Sochi is from September until the end of October. Known as the velvet season, most of the tourist crowds have dispersed, but it’s still warm enough to go swimming. Room rates are also good.

Sochi has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters from December to March and warm summers from May to October. Keep this in mind when you book your flight to Sochi International Airport. There are many great Air Canada flights to Russian cities, including the Soviet city of Sochi.

Where To Stay

In the summer, a beachfront hotel is bliss, and in winter, a cabin in the alps will be perfect. Whatever the season, you can find plenty of accommodation options to fit every budget in Sochi. Here are some recommended stays to kickstart your research.

Zhemchuzhina sits on Sochi’s waterfront promenade, and you can walk to nice bars and restaurants from this central location. Enjoy the indoor and outdoor swimming pools, sauna, gym, casino, and shops. Request a room on a higher floor for great views.

If you visit during winter, you might consider Krasnaya Polyana. The alpine resort is a scenic stay surrounded by snowy mountains. Guests at the chalets and villas can enjoy the Italian restaurant, Irish pub, fitness centre, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, children’s club, and ski rentals. Catch the hotel shuttle to the nearby affiliated 5-star Grand Hotel Polyana and Gazprom Mountain Tourist Center, where you can ride ski lifts to hit the slopes.

If you prefer a brand home, the Hyatt Regency Sochi offers beachfront luxury with excellent service. Right on the beachside promenade of Primorskaya Street, the location is great for sightseeing. Enjoy the pool, room service and elegant rooms during your stay at the iconic Hyatt.

Things To See & Do

Sochi National Park is a great place for hiking, especially in autumn and spring. Russia’s oldest national park is home to an abundance of wildlife, some of it endangered. Mount Akhun is 663 meters above sea level, with a 100-foot-tall Romanesque tower at the peak. It was built in 1936, and from the tower, you can admire gorgeous panoramic views of the Caucasus Mountains and the Black Sea. It is also a scenic place to watch the sunset. In the area, you can also see the ruins of a medieval Christian church and many caves.

Stalin’s Summer Residence is now a museum with many personal belongings and Stalin’s waxwork. You can take a guided tour and learn about the legend of Stalin’s phantom, which some say still walks around the grounds at night.

The Monkey Nursery Center prepares and trains monkeys for experimental space flights. The large centre is home to nearly a dozen monkey species and is open to the public.

Sochi Arboretum, also known as the green heart of the resort, sits on over 40 hectares of exotic plants and trees from all over the world. You can see over 1800 species, including oaks, pines, palm trees and rare exotics.

Park Riviera is a popular resort park that can keep you busy all day long. With amusement rides, sports area, art galleries, shopping, a fountain of love, dolphinarium and beach access, every traveler can find their fun. Some call Park Riviera Russia’s version of Disneyland. Note the stunning magnolia trees planted by Russian astronauts in the name of peaceful space exploration and perfectly manicured flower gardens.

The Sochi Art Museum is housed in a regal neoclassical building featuring well-preserved Russian paintings and sculpture spanning many eras. Sochi is full of interesting museums and we recommend seeing the Back in the USSR Museum and the Mechanical Museum of Leonardo Da Vinci.

Sochi has a great nightlife scene with many bars, clubs, and restaurants to enjoy. The shopping is great too, with many boutiques, well-known brands, and retail stores to get your essential vacation shopping fix, including souvenirs for everyone back home. Adler Market is a popular farmers market where you can pick up fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers and produce. Mandarin Mall is an excellent place to shop for all kinds of Russian bargains.

Sochi Olympic Park was built when the city hosted the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games. Today it is used for concerts, events, sports activities and more.
