About Barcelona

The Spanish city and capital of Catalonia is 90 miles (150 km) south of the French border. It is Spain’s major Mediterranean port and commercial hub and was once dubbed “The Paris of Spain” by the Danish author Hans Christian Anderson.

The enchanting architectural and historic sites are surrounded by scenic nature, including the ocean and mountains. It’s easy to get around by foot, bike, taxi, cable car, bus or subway. There are accommodation options to suit every budget, from budget-friendly guesthouses and backpackers hostels to luxury hotels.

About Barcelona

Barcelona is a culturally diverse place with over a third of the population coming from outside of Catalonia.

It is hard to think about Barcelona without thinking about soccer. FC Barcelona and RCD Espanyol are the best-known teams, with the latter being the first Spanish team to consist of all Spanish players. Both teams are very popular all over Europe. So catch a game if you can to see the national sports heroes in action on the field.

Things to See & Do

Ciutat Vella is the Gothic Quarter in central Barcelona. The oldest part of the city includes Las Ramblas, which attracts many travelers for its attractive boulevard, boardwalk and beach. You can walk from the town to the beach with many interesting stops along the way.

In L’Eixample, you can admire the modernist architecture, shopping boutiques and the stunning Plaça de Catalunya. There are many trendy bars, cafes and restaurants in this area to refuel before more shopping and sightseeing. If you love retro and vintage things, you will want to visit the Mercat Els Encants flea market in the evening to go treasure hunting.

Set aside a whole day to explore Eixample. You can see famed architect Antoni Gaudi’s work, including the Casa Batlló, Casa Mila, and Sagrada Familia. Many travelers go to Barcelona for the sole purpose of seeing the Sagrada Familia. The awe-inspiring Roman Catholic Church can be seen from almost anywhere in the city and towers above all the other buildings around it. Construction on the church began about 150 years ago. It is slated to be finished in 2026 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Gaudi’s death.

Things to See & Do in Barcelona

For fresh air and natural surroundings, Sants-Montjuic is worth a hike or ride on the cable car to the top of the mountain to see epic views of the city.

There are many tours if you want to benefit from a knowledgeable guide and pre-arranged transportation, but it’s easy to make your way too and often more fun.

To see the most impressive collection of sea life up close, go to the Aquarium Barcelona in Port Vell. It is host to an astonishing 11,000 creatures, including sharks, fish, turtles, sea horses and starfish. Almost any underwater sea creature can be found here. The shark tank is a highlight for many visitors, and you can even go swimming with the sharks if you are brave enough.

Barcelona has a high rate of return visitors, and it is easy to see why. It’s almost impossible to take in all the Instagram-worthy sites in one trip. Plus, it’s nice to roam around random streets and soak in the atmosphere of this beautiful city. Off the beaten track is where some of the best adventures can be found.

  • Picasso Museum
  • The Gothic cathedral Santa Maria Del Mar
  • La Boqueria Market for local produce including olives, cheese, fruit and vegetables
  • The light and sound show at the Magic Fountain of Montjuic
  • Buy some espadrilles (sandals) or local ceramics for a souvenir or gift
  • Park Guell with Gaudi’s sculptural buildings
  • Go to Tibidabo Amusement Park to ride the colorful Ferris wheel

Food & Restaurants

Spanish food and Mediterranean flavors are delicious and Barcelona knows how to serve up a feast. Tapas should be indulged in as soon as you arrive so you can get a head start on tasting every dish possible. Next hit up a chupitos, which is a bar that serves shots of alcohol. If you are fond of anchovies, you will love the local L’Escala anchovies, which are extra salty.

Lexi’s Restaurant & Cocktail Bar is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and is a modern chic place to sample quality local food. Electronic beats mixed with cocktails kick the party off every night of the week.

La Gastronomica is always busy because the food is great. The atmosphere of the trendy restaurant and bar matches the food. We highly recommend their tapas and salmon dishes.

If you visit the Barcelona Cathedral, you are only minutes away from La Alcoba Azul and a great tapas bar experience. It’s a rustic little place that attracts locals and tourists alike who all go there for the tastiest tapas in town.
