About Xi'an

Xi’an, home to over 8.3 million people, is the capital city of the Shaanxi Province in Northwest China. It is notable for being the starting point of the Silk Road and is where the Terracotta Army of Emperor Qin Shi Huang is located.

Today it is a center of economic and scientific growth in China, as there are many facilities for research and development and space exploration, among others.

General Weather

Xi’an typically sees hot and humid summers and cold dry winters. You will typically see distinct seasonal variation. You may even see a small amount of snow in the winter.

Best Time to Visit

Xi’an is beautiful throughout the year, but the best time to visit is the fall, specifically between the months of October and December because this part of the year tends to see the least humid climate and the weather is most pleasant.

Things to Do

Visit the Terracotta Warriors – and visit early! This massive collection of terracotta sculptures was built as a funerary act for Emperor Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China, who died in 210 BC. The collection of 8,000 statues, 130 chariots, and 600 horses were discovered as recently as 1974 and are notable for not only their quantity but for the fact that each and every one is unique!

Visit the Big Goose Pagoda. This historic structure was completed in 652 AD for Buddist sutras who came to the area from India. It’s a prime example of a Tang-style pagoda, which is characterised by its shape which is more square than round. It’s also a great place to get some amazing views of the city – you can climb up the pagoda and spend some time at the top.

If you’re interested in musical performances and historic sites, visit the Drum Tower in Xi’an. There are drums located inside which are played every sunset to mark the end of the day. It was built in 1380, and is filled with beautifully decorated drums of varying sizes. This is also a great viewpoint – you can climb up and see the city from 38 meters above the ground.

Visit the Huaqing Palace, which is a royal palace and natural hot springs with a lot to explore. It’s located at the foot of Mount Li and is a beautiful place to be. You can see many cultural artifacts, gardens, and the hot springs themselves. There are 100 thermal pools to explore.
