About Singapore

The island city-state of Singapore is located between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea. The history of the city begins in the year 1299 with the founding of the Kingdom of Singapura, a historic Malaysian kingdom. Later, in 1819, Sir Stamford Raffles established a British trading post there and remained under British control for many years.

Today when you visit Singapore you’ll see influences from a variety of cultures. For a small island, Singapore has a lot of diversity. It has four official languages: English, Malay, Mandarin, and Tamil.

Note that Singapore has some strict rules that you should respect when you visit. You should not smoke in most public places, and you can be fined heavily for littering or bringing gum into the country. There are also limitations about the hours you can drink in public places so be sure to review the current laws and rules before you go.

General Weather

The weather in Singapore is defined as a tropical rainforest climate that is present throughout the year. You won’t typically see different seasons throughout the year as the weather remains fairly consistent.

Best Time to Visit

The weather in Singapore is fairly consistent so you can visit throughout the year. That said, the months between December and June typically is considered the best time to visit as the amount of rainfall during this time is less than it is during the rest of the year, and subsequently there is less humidity.

Things to Do

Singapore is packed with things to do, and you can get started without even leaving the airport. The Jewel Changi Airport is attached to the airport and is a great destination for dining and shopping. You can try some local favourites or get some other options, such as a burger from the New York City-born chain, Shake Shack.

Singapore’s population does include some diversity, and many of the residents of the country are originally from India. Visit Little India to learn more about Singapore’s Indian population. You can shop, eat, and see some interesting architecture. The Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple is also located here and is a beautiful and vibrant landmark.

Stop at the Raffles Singapore. This historic hotel is a great place to stay, but it’s also open as a restaurant and bar. Try the famous Singapore Sling, a cocktail that was created at the hotel in 1900. It’s made with dry gin, cherry brandy, Cointreau, Benedictine, pineapple juice, lime juice, grenadine, and bitters. If you drink alcohol, this famous drink is one you’ll want to try.

About the Airport

The Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) is one of the largest and most significant transport hubs in Asia. It’s also a beautiful structure and a destination in itself where delayed flights aren’t necessarily a bad thing because you’ll get to spend more time exploring the airport. The Jewel Changi Airport is a nature themed complex where you can shop, eat, and see the world’s largest indoor waterfall.
