About Santorini

Santorini is in the Aegean Sea and is one of the Cyclades islands, which are part of the Greek islands. The main towns are Fira and Oia are the main towns with about 10 km separating the two places.

In the 16th century BC, a volcanic eruption ruined Santorini (then called Thera) and it was rebuilt. The volcano is still active but dormant and hasn’t shown any major activity for a long time.

Sun seekers will be basking in the sun and swimming in the cool blue waters of a swimming pool or the ocean, while thrill-seekers will be off sailing, kayaking, snorkelling, hiking and diving off the side of luxury boats.

Weather & Best Time to Visit

With a warm Medaterrian climate, Santorini has great weather for almost all year round, with July, August and September being the hottest months. December, January and February are the coldest months, with temperatures dropping to 11 degrees Celsius and reaching highs of around 15 degrees Celsius.

Keep this in mind when you book your flight to Santorini. You can fly to Athens and catch a ferry or fly into Santorini International Airport, which is also a military airport. There are lots of great Air Canada flights from many major cities in Canada.

Where to Stay

The main accommodation areas in Santorini are Fira, Oia, Imerovigli and Firostefani. You can find luxury hotels, cave hotels, private homes to rent, guest houses, villas, apartments, suites and studios in all budget ranges.

Reverie Santorini Hotel is within walking distance to Fira and is a good place to base yourself for sightseeing. Clean rooms with that iconic Greek island vibe and personal service make this place feel like a home away from home.

Aptly named Luxury Villa Blue Dome Santorini, this villa is inspired by the cave house concept with all the luxury you could imagine. The views from the elegant and chic rooms is spectacular and the private heated infinity pool with jacuzzi is pure bliss.

More affordable but still lovely is the Galatia Villas. Also, in the Fira area, the villas are clean, modest and have everything you need for a comfortable stay. The staff is happy to help with tour bookings and travel advice and there are many restaurants and shops close by.

Things to See & Do

See the ruins of a prehistoric village at Akrotiri. The major volcanic eruption destroyed much of Akrotiri, but today you can see frescoes, ancient objects, and artworks that were preserved and rediscovered. Many believe the village inspired Plato’s story of Atlantis.

You can’t visit Santorini without seeing ancient Thera. This stunning collection of ruins sits high on a hill between the beaches of Perissa and Kamari. If you are interested in history, take a tour or book a private guide to learn interesting details about the area. For example, at the Terrace of the Festivals, men once danced naked to pay tribute to Apollo.

Profitis Ilias is a 798-meter-high mountain with an awe-inspiring monastery on top. With great views, it is a lovely place to watch the sunset. Dating back to 1711, the monastery is one of the oldest on Santorini and showcases the finest Cycladic architecture. Once there was a school there. Today it is home to monks who take care of the buildings and make wine. There is a museum with rare books and sculptures. The chapel is open to the public but not the monastery.

Beach time goes without saying when you are in sunny Santorini. There are many beautiful spots to catch some rays and go swimming. The Red Beach, Kamari, Perissa and Perivolos beaches are some of the best.

With such beautiful oceans with clear blue waters, a boat trip is very tempting. Go sailing on a private charter, dive off the side of the boat for snorkelling and explore little islands where there might not be anyone else. You can also catch a ferry to other islands or all the way back to Athens for your trip home, which can be a nice experience when tourist crowds are not at their peak.
