About Nice

Nice is a beautiful seaport city and is the cultural capital of the French Riviera. It is located in the southern region of France and is known for its deep blue waters and picturesque Mediterranean beaches. It was founded by the Greeks and during the 19th century became a retreat for the European elite. Now tourists flock to Nice to experience its vibrant street life and old-world opulence that make this city unforgettable.

For stunning views of Nice be sure to visit Nice Castle Hill, a park that overlooks the Nice Old Town. The name of the park stems from the military fortress that originally overlooked the bay of Nice from the 11th to 18th century. You can see everything from mountains to the main harbour while on the lookout point. For an extra spectacular view, try to visit Nice Castle Hill at sunset to catch some magnificent colours in the sky.

Weather & Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Nice is from September to October or from March to April when room rates are reasonable. May and June are the busiest months with crowds and peak rates for accommodation.

Keep this in mind when you book your flight to Nice Côte d’Azur Airport. There are many great Air Canada flights and Air France flights to be found online. You might want to fly into the international airport at Nice or another major airport in France before booking a cheap domestic flight to Nice.

Where To Stay

Take your time to research accommodation when booking your trip to Nice in France. There are so many lovely options in many styles, from traditional to contemporary to arty. Maybe spend some time at the beach then some nights in the inner city to mix up your stay with some sunny beach days and fun city nights.

The decor in the rooms and whole hotel at Hotel Nice Excelsior is quite striking. The designer wasn’t afraid of colour and if you like slightly quirky or memorable accommodation, you have found your place. Rooms are cozy and luxurious and styled on train travel. There is a courtyard to enjoy a few drinks in the afternoon sun.

What you first notice about Le Castel Enchante is the beautiful exterior covered in pink bougainvillea flowers. The interiors of this 19th-century mansion are just as gorgeous, with clean rooms that are spacious and traditional. There are sea views and a small swimming pool at this charming little bed and breakfast.

Le Grimaldi is a historical hotel with old-world charm blended with contemporary touches. Staff is attentive and helpful with lots of ideas about what you can see and do during your stay in Nice.

Things To See & Do

The Promenade des Anglais is a wonderful place to chill out and watch the world go by, take in some shopping, or enjoy a great meal. It runs 7 km from the airport to the Quai des États-Unis and you will see many sights and people from different walks of life along the scenic boardwalk.

Marché Aux Fleurs Cours Saleya is one of the most well-known market areas in Nice. You can buy fresh food, local produce and flowers at the outdoor stalls. Many sellers offer free samples to tempt you to buy their goods.

The Castle of Nice on top of a large hill was once used by the military before Louis XIV destroyed it in 1706. Today Castle Hill is a pretty park where locals and tourists enjoy the cafe, gardens and scenic views of the bay of Nice.

The old town is called Vieille Ville or Old Nice and sits just below Castle Hill. Sip coffee and eat pastries in a little cafe or wander around the cobblestone streets taking photos of the colourful architecture. Nice Cathedral is in the old town and the 17th-century building is full of interesting paintings and sculptures.

The St Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral is a gorgeous Byzantine-style building owned by the Russian Federation and recognized as a national monument of France. The biggest Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Western Europe opened in 1912.

Spend a day touring the museums in Nice, including The Marc Chagall National Museum displaying the work of painter Marc Chagall and the Picasso Museum, which features a chapel decorated by the famous artist. The Modern and Contemporary Art Museum of Nice is also worth a visit. If you love history, you will find more notable museums around the French Riviera.

For sun lovers, the beaches in Nice are sure to impress even though they are pebbly rather than sandy. We love La Reserve Beach, with a high diving platform into the ocean. Cocoa Beach is another lovely sandy beach with rocks, showers and a little cafe. Castel Beach is a private beach with sun loungers and food and drinks available.

France is famous for outstanding food and drink and in Nice, you can dine on the best. Being close to the ocean, the seafood in Nice is fresh and abundant. Nicoise salad was invented in Nice, so be sure to indulge in a healthy meal full of local tomatoes, radish, onion, olives, eggs, and anchovies. Ratatouille, les petits farcis, and province rose wine are all specialities of the local area. Forget about any diet plans and indulge in all the delicious flavours Nice has to offer.
