About Lusaka

Lusaka is the capital city of the country, Zambia. Situated in the southern-central part of the country, it is at 4198 feet above the sea level. The city has played a vital role in the economic growth of the country and is developing massively. Lusaka is the largest and fastest growing city of Zambia.

The city connects to the country’s four main highways, each heading towards north, south, east and west. Lusaka is the commercial and political hub of the government in Zambia. History

British South Africa Company took over the area of Lusaka in the 1890s and formed a British colony Northern Rhodesia. Lusaka became the capital of Northern Rhodesia in 1935. After this declaration, the growth and development of this city started massively. Construction of huge buildings and infrastructure in the city took place under British colonial government. As the Europeans and Asians held the major part of the population, the native residents of Lusaka had to face huge discrimination. Lusaka became the centre of the independence movement, which led to the formation of the Republic of Zambia. In 1964, Zambia became independent and declared Lusaka as its capital city.

According to the Koppen climate classification, the climate of Lusaka falls under humid subtropical climate (cwa). Lusaka undergoes three seasons in total: winter, summer and monsoon. The winter and autumn season starts from April and ends by August. The summer season is between September and October and the monsoon season starts from November and ends by March. The hottest month is October with the average temperature of around 32 degree Celsius and the coldest month is July when the daily average temperature is 14 degree Celsius.

Best Time to Visit

  • April to May:

Lusaka enjoys the autumn season during these months. The weather during this season is comfortably warm with the average temperature of 28 degree Celsius to 26 degree Celsius. The nights are usually cold. The rainfall is very low during these months. It rains only zero to six days on an average. However, the tourism during this period is quite slow.

  • June to August: 

The weather during the month of June, July and August is cool. The average temperature is 27 degree Celsius to 23 degree Celsius. If you like cold weather then this period will be best for you to visit Lusaka. Winters are the busiest months as the tourism rate is quite high, which results in hike of cost in lodging and other facilities.

  • September and October:

The weather during September and October is dry and hot. October is the hottest month and the average temperature during this month is around 32 degree Celsius. Therefore, if you enjoy soaking yourself into the sun then this is the best period to plan your trip to Lusaka.

  • November to March:

These are the wettest months of the year. The rainfall during these months is quite high along with high humidity. The average rainfall during these months amounts to 850 mm.

Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (LUN) is the closest and city airport of Lusaka. It is at an approximate distance of 19.7 kilometres northeast to the city. Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport (at the distance of 271.2 kilometres), Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport (at the distance of 376.0 kilometres) and Victoria Falls Airport (at the distance of 397.1 kilometres) are some of the other nearby airports to Lusaka.
