Things to Do

Most attractions are located centrally, so it is easy to walk, although some areas are hilly. Public transportation, including the metro, is affordable and easy to use. There is a lot to take in, so try to devote three to five days of your vacation to Kyiv if possible. Every day you will fall more in love with this wonderful city.

The old Kyiv area is where you can see all the glorious cathedrals and historic landmarks, including St Sophia’s Cathedral, Independence Square, St Michael’s Golden-domed Monastery and St Andrew’s Church. You can walk through Andriivs’kyi Descent, which is a famous street filled with museums, theatres, and art galleries. It is a favourite stop for tourists in search of paintings, souvenirs, arts and crafts. You might also hear locals referring to it as the Montmartre of Kyiv.

You can follow it through to the trendy arty area of Podil. With charming cobblestone roads, there are more galleries and shops. One-Street Museum features period clothing and antiques and the Ukrainian National Chernobyl Museum covers the history of the nuclear disaster.

The Friendship of the Nations arch looks stunning in the day and evening. The arch with a riverfront deck was built in 1982 to honor Russia and Ukraine. Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, also known as the Kyiv Monastery of the Caves, is a historic Orthodox Christian monastery that is absolutely gorgeous. The white and gold regal exterior is magnificent, and the mummified monks inside are truly fascinating. For pilgrims, the monastery is the holiest ground in Kyiv.

The stainless steel Motherland Monument is stunning at 340 feet tall and was constructed to honour the heroes of the Soviet Union in the Second World War.

See all this from the air with a romantic hot air balloon ride. Rise early and experience the skies with a scenic experience before breakfast or opt for a sunset ride that will also be a memorable part of your trip. Once you land, you will enjoy champagne and amaze at what you saw from up high.

For something truly unique, take a tank driving tour and lesson while in Kyiv. This thrilling military experience will attract action-seeking daredevils who love living life on the edge. You even get to shoot from the sturdy armoured vehicle.

Did you know the deepest subway station in the world is in Kyiv? Arsenalna Metro Station has the longest escalator to reach the platform – it can take five minutes. You will see locals running down the steps instead and certainly getting their fitness fix for the day.
