History

The city of Cairo stems out from the ancient city of Memphis which is situated 24 kilometres southwest along the river Nile. The ancient city of Memphis was founded in 2,000 BC and King Menes became its first ruler. 

After 30 BC when the Romans took control of Egypt, the Babylon fortress was built on the river Nile in the 1st century. It is one of the oldest structure in the city since that time. 

When Cairo was established as the Fustat City in the 10th Century by the Fatimids, the city went through a great architectural period. The construction of many famous landmarks such as the Al-Azhar mosque underwent during their reign.

Cairo’s Islamic culture flourished in the 12th century when Saladin became the first Sultan of Egypt. He commissioned the construction of many significant buildings including the Cairo Citadel.

When the black death plague struck Cairo, it killed almost 40 percent of the population. The population shrunk by hundreds of thousands within eight months. 

When Muhammad Ali Pasha came to power in the early 19th century, he attempted to modernize Egypt. He instilled many reforms in the form of military, economic and cultural reforms. He commissioned a great many construction projects inspired by Paris such as boulevards and plazas that can still be seen if you visit Old Cairo. With its hot desert climate, the city experiences high and dry temperatures. There isn’t a big difference in temperature between the two seasons but there is a big difference between night and day. The temperatures can go as low as 11° C during winter and 20° C in summer.

  • Salah El-Din Citadel – It houses a lot of worthwhile attractions like the Mohammad Ali Mosque and several museums.

  • Saqqara – This step pyramid dates back to the Third Dynasty and is famously known to be made by the infamous architect, Imhotep. It houses the Pharaoh Djoser.

  • Dahshur – Situated 23 miles south of Cairo, this site houses five pyramids dating back to around 2575 BC. 
  • Memphis – The ancient capital city of Memphis can still be found in its scattered ruins of status and stone temples. The main attractions are the Ramses II statue and a giant alabaster sphinx.
