History
The city of Cairo stems out from the ancient city of Memphis which is situated 24 kilometres southwest along the river Nile. The ancient city of Memphis was founded in 2,000 BC and King Menes became its first ruler.
After 30 BC when the Romans took control of Egypt, the Babylon fortress was built on the river Nile in the 1st century. It is one of the oldest structure in the city since that time.

When the black death plague struck Cairo, it killed almost 40 percent of the population. The population shrunk by hundreds of thousands within eight months.
When Muhammad Ali Pasha came to power in the early 19th century, he attempted to modernize Egypt. He instilled many reforms in the form of military, economic and cultural reforms. He commissioned a great many construction projects inspired by Paris such as boulevards and plazas that can still be seen if you visit Old Cairo.
