It is one of the hottest cities in Africa. Since it is near to the Sahara, there is heavy humidity. As a result, high temperatures are inescapable. But the weather won’t be so harsh between November and March. 

Major economic sectors of Accra include finance, communications, construction, transport, and fishing. Three fourth of the country’s manufacturing is only from here. Accra is the second-largest exporter of cocoa.

Accra has an area of 225.67km2. Of the total Ghana population of 31,548,017 Accra has a population of 1,963,264. Education and industries are the main force that contributes to population growth here. There was a high rural-urban migration to this city from 1960 to 1970 because of the rapid growth in manufacturing sectors and the population growth went high after industrialization.  

History

By the end of the 15th century when the Portuguese settled on the coast, Accra was occupied by the Ga tribe people. The first fort by the Portuguese in Accra provided an opportunity for the Ga people to trade with the outside world. During the Portuguese period and followed by Swedish, Dutch, French, British, and Danish, Accra served as a centre of trade. The three European Forts built by the Dutch, Danes, and the British, helped to a greater extent for the development of Accra. Accra expanded to a sizeable town by the end of the 17th century. In 1877 Accra became the capital of Ghana replacing Cape Coast.

Weather

The weather in Accra doesn’t differ very much. Throughout the year there will only be hot temperatures and it will be the hottest from February to April. During these warmest times, the temperature will be around 32o C and during the nights it may drop around 26oC. Whatever the temperature, what we experience depends on the humidity.

Best Time to Visit

Festivals Celebrated in Accra

Each May, the Ga people celebrate the agriculture season. People will be dancing through the streets of Accra. This is celebrated as a remembrance of the terrible famine Ghana faced. There will be music, dance, food, and drinks offerings. They pray to their gods to bless them with an abundant harvest, the coming years.
