About Cayo Cruz

Cayo Cruz is a key in the archipelago Jardines del Rey and is part of the Camaguey province in Cuba. At 25 km long, with a surface area of only 32 square kilometers, this long and narrow island is connected to Cayo Romano to the west and the Playa Jiguey via causeway.

Cayo Cruz Coconut

The closest airport, Aeropuerto Jardines del Rey, is located on Cayo Coco, about an hour away.

Fishing is a major tourism draw on Cayo Cruz, thanks to slightly deeper flats here than in other areas of Cuba, resulting in excellent numbers of fish and sea life throughout the entire season.

Weather in Cayo Cruz

Cayo Cruz has a subtropical climate with two seasons each year, the wet season, and the dry season.

The wet season lasts from May through October, with the hottest months of the year being June, July, August, and September. The average high temperature during this time is around 30°C.

The dry season lasts from November through April, with low amounts of rainfall and comfortable levels of humidity. The coldest months of the year are December, January, and February. The average low temperature during this time is around 26°C.

The temperature does not fluctuate much throughout the year, although in the winter months, there is a chance of a cold front coming off the coast of Cuba, dropping the average temperatures by several degrees for a few days.

The Best Months to Visit Cayo Cruz

The best time of year to visit Cayo Cruz will be during the transitional dry season months of April and November. The weather is most enjoyable during these months when the temperatures are slightly higher, but the humidity is quite low compared to the very humid summertime.

December, January, February, and March are also excellent months within the dry season for low rainfall, low humidity, moderate sea and air temperatures, and the lowest risk for hurricanes or severe weather, making any timeframe within the dry season a good time to visit Cayo Cruz.

The La Marina Plaza and Spa is a smaller resort with 58 standard rooms and 2 suites, all with views of the ocean. Places to Visit in Cayo Cruz

The Cayo Romano/Cruz Fishery is an enormous system of flats, lagoons, and estuaries where commercial fishing is strictly forbidden and enforced leaving an area 366 square kilometers in size available for anglers to cast off in this pristine and biologically diverse ecosystem teeming with bonefish, permit, snook, and barracuda. Reservations are available on skiffs with a variety of local tour operators.

For guests interested in seeing fish and coral underwater, there are several scuba diving excursions that can be booked as well. Most resorts offer packages with local dive shops ensuring that you can enjoy a safe dive to some of the best locations along the reef.

Restaurants & Food

The small key of Cayo Cruz is mostly untouched apart from a few world class hotels and resorts. While this is a huge benefit for those coming here to enjoy the unspoiled natural paradise, it does limit the off-resort options for dining. In this case, the only dining options for guests on Cayo Cruz will be at the hotels and resorts.

Cayo Cruz Cigars

Guests interested in exploring off-site food options will need to travel to one of the larger surrounding islands, like Cayo Romano, where small, locally owned establishments will be more plentiful. Some Cuban specialties to look for are rice, beans and plantains, mojo-marinated pork, and ropa vieja.
