History of Kenora

Aerial View of Kenora

Mather-Walls House. A historical house built by John Mather, a local businessman and philanthropist. And this house is even haunted! Is it the ghost of John Mather? You will have to visit to find out. It is operated by the Lake of the Woods Historical Society, and is open for tours in the summer months when they often hold Victorian Teas.

Historical buffs will appreciate the Lake of the Woods Museum. The museum was established in 1964 to collect, preserve, exhibit, research, and interpret items that best illustrate the settlement and development of the Kenora area. The museum has a vast collection of over 25,000 items! This well-established educational experience is home to a stunning array of artifacts and local archives, serving not only as a basis for permanent exhibits, but for rotating thematic displays and special events.

M.S. Kenora. Take a cruise on the M.S. Kenora, with tours daily on Lake of the Woods. It is a two-hour cruise that gives you the best views of this spectacular lake, and draws thousands every year. The lake is dotted with islands and the shoreline is picture perfect. The cruise will also take you past some impressive homes along the shore. Lunch and dinner cruises are available.

Fish & Beer

Fishing in Kenora

Fishermen will appreciate this area for the plethora of angling opportunities on the lake. Trophy-sized muskie can be caught, and a catch over the 50-inch range is not unheard of. Large pike and walleye are also here, as well as excellent smallmouth and largemouth bass. It might come as a surprise to learn that the crappie fishing on this lake is also very good, and is actually a lot of fun to fish.

Since this is such a popular fishing spot, first-timers may be a bit intimidated by the traffic on the lake, but there are plenty of outfitters and guiding services that can help you navigate the waters with ease. Whether you have your own boat, or choose to rent one, a good guide will be able to take you to some good fishing spots.

Lake of the Woods Brewing Company. Who doesn’t appreciate a good craft beer? This fantastic place to enjoy a good brew is located in Kenora’s old firehall. They produce many flagship beers such as Sultana Gold and Forgotten Lake.

They are always introducing seasonal beers, so come often! During the weekend, you can even book a tour of the beer making process right on site, to appreciate what goes into each and every batch of their fine beers.

Shop & Discover Kenora

Shopping in Kenora

As a popular tourist destination especially in the warmer months, you cannot miss downtown Kenora and all of its great attractions – shopping being one of them. Here you will find all of the normal touristy spots, with souvenirs and Lake of the Woods gear, but you will also find some pretty unique boutique shops for that special something to take home. Local artists abound, and downtown is the perfect place to find that uniquely hand-crafted item. In the shops, you will find everything from paintings and sculpture to books by local authors and one-of-a-kind jewelry.

Shop the Matiowski Farmers Market. Located in the Whitecap Pavilion and held every Wednesday from June through October, it is one of the largest markets in northwest Ontario. Not only can you fill up on fresh produce, you will also find a wide selection of baked goods and canned items such as pickles, jams, salsa, and canned fruit. Local artisans also sell their unique wares here, as well. The vendors change from week to week, so you’ll never visit the same market twice.
