Cabo San Lucas is part of the region of Los Cabos. It includes the city of San Jose del Cabo. Even though there is a difference, many people use the names interchangeably, thus causing some confusion for first-time visitors.

Los Cabos has two cities – Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. Running down the middle of them is the tourist corridor where you will surely find yourself during your vacation. When you land at Los Cabos International Airport, you are about 40 minutes from Cabo San Lucas and about half an hour from San Jose del Cabo under normal traffic conditions. So the two places are very close together.

Looking at the Los Cabos Mexico map, you’ll see Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, is on the southernmost tip of the Baja California Peninsula. The smaller town of San Jose del Cabo is a little northeast. Together these two places make up Los Cabos, which translates to the two. In case you are curious, here are five differences between Los Cabos and Cabo San Lucus.

The Vibe

San Jose del Cabo is quieter and more chilled out than Cabo San Lucas. In the village, you will discover a vibrant art scene, boutique shopping and rustic restaurants. Cabo San Lucas is more happening and active with more restaurants and bars, entertainment and big brand resorts. So take that into consideration when booking your accommodation. But really, both places are so close to each other that it doesn’t matter. Whatever you want to see and do will be easily reached.

Cabo San Lucas has some pretty amazing accommodation options

Cabo San Lucas has some pretty amazing accommodation options. The beautiful Grand Solar Land’s End Resort and Spa is a standout accommodation choice if you want to splash out and stay somewhere very luxurious. This high-end resort comes with exceptional service, awe-inspiring beach views and a reputation for treating guests like royalty. If that doesn’t tempt you, we know the spa treatments are divine and the food and drink are just as excellent.

Also, check out the Bahia Hotel and Beach House, which has the most fantastic beach club. You are spoilt for choices with where to stay, so take your time researching your digs to find the best place to match your travel style and budget.

Some of the best restaurants can be found in San Jose del Cabo. Farm-to-table goodness is served up at Lumbre, a popular joint with good food, an open fire, great mixology, wine and beer. El Fish and Grill and Don Sanchez Restaurant are also great Mexican options when you are in San Jose del Cabo. Further afield, places like Sunset Monalisa should be on your dining schedule.

The dining options at Sunset Monalisa are spectacular. Choose from a five-course signature menu, prefixed Ala carte menu or go all out on The Monalisa Experience. The surroundings are sublime on the terrace, rocks, or indoors, with epic views, especially at sunset. Live jazz music adds to the romantic atmosphere that you should try at least once during your trip.

The Airport

The Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) is in Los Cabos

The Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) is in Los Cabos. To reach Cabo San Lucas from the airport takes about 30-40 minutes by taxi. Cabo San Lucas doesn’t have an airport. That means wherever you stay in Los Cabos, you will arrive at that airport and take a taxi to your destination. Los Cabos Airport, also known as LCA, is a major airport in Mexico serving San José del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas and the Los Cabos area.

One of the busiest airports in the country, it is based in San José del Cabo in Los Cabos Municipality in Baja California Sur state. As you pass through, remember San José del Cabo International Airport was designed by the talented Mexican architect and great-grandson of Queen Isabella II of Spain, Manuel De Santiago-de Borbón González Bravo. The talented architect was in charge of the 1997 renovation and expansion of the airport, which is high-tech and modern.

The Beaches

Swimming in the ocean

While it is easy to see the blue ocean from many places in Los Cabos, there is only one good place for swimming, and that is Medano Beach in Cabo San Lucas. Other areas are considered dangerous for swimming with solid rips, big waves and steep ocean floor drop-offs, making them unsuitable for even the best swimmers.

Also known as Playa El Medano or Dune Beach, Medano Beach in Cabo San Lucas goes from the harbor’s east side and along Cabo San Lucas Bay to Villa del Palmar. Many bars, restaurants and resorts make it a great place to stay if you like the beach life. You can spend your days swimming, kayaking, parasailing and jet skiing.

On the sand, there are volleyball, beach parties, vendors selling souvenirs and often fun events to enjoy. There is always something going on at Medano Beach.

You can catch a water taxi from here to see Land’s End Arch and Lover’s Beach. This amazing rock formation is a well-known natural landmark that is very photogenic. Lover’s Beach is nearby and also a place you can dip your toes in the ocean, although it’s not as great for swimming as Medano Beach.

Of course, if you love swimming in the ocean, another way is by taking a boat trip. Nothing is more fun than jumping off the side of the boat, swimming around with the tropical fish, and maybe snorkeling. There are many group trips and you can also charter a boat privately if you have a budget and a group of people for a more exclusive experience.

The advantages of a private charter are many, including the freedom to come and go as you please, being together with people you know and sailing around the areas you are most interested in under the guidance of your caption and crew. While it might seem like a grand idea, if you are traveling as part of a group, it can be a similar price per person as a group tour would be.

Transportation

To get around the large area of Los Cabos, you need transportation.

To get around the large area of Los Cabos, you need transportation. You can get a taxi, rent a car or catch public transportation like the bus. If you are in Cabo San Lucus, it is small enough to get around by foot. For this reason, many people like to stay in this area. It is easy to walk around, be in the middle of the nightlife, restaurants and shopping and not worry about finding transportation or parking if you’ve rented a vehicle.
