Cheapest ways to Get from Cancun to Cozumel

Jun 1 , 2022 · 11 min read

When talking about Mexico, how can we not talk about the famous destinations; Cancun and Cozumel. Cancun is known for being Mexico’s hottest beach destination, whereas Cozumel is one of the best places known for scuba diving, not just in Mexico but in the world.

Not many know but Cozumel once used to be a secluded island hideaway, which has now become one of the most recognized locales in Mexico’s majestic Caribbean region.

Boasting white-sand beaches, coral reefs, and an enormous swath of wild areas, it is truly an island paradise.

Located on the Mesoamerican barrier reef, the second-largest coral reef in the world, Cozumel is spot on to experience island life which is why it welcomes visitors every year from all around the world.

Another reason why people prefer Cozumel over Cancun is that it has fewer tourists as compared to Cancun. The beaches, hotels, and clubs are not as packed as in Cancun, which therefore lets you enjoy yourself without any interference and in peace.

But how does one get to this island? This is one question that revolves around many travelers’ minds.

Resting in the Caribbean Sea just off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula and Cancun, Cozumel is situated in the Quintana Roo state and is a sought-after destination among divers, with underwater paradises such as the Palancar and Columbia coral reefs to see.

In contrast to commercialized coastal cities, like Cancun and Tulum, Cozumel is a relatively small and unspoiled island. Most of the island is covered by lush tropical forests, empty beaches, and natural reserves.

Furthermore, in Cozumel at Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park, there are several diving spots around a section of the Mesoamerican reef and the Museo Subacuatico de Arte’s submerged sculptures.

Chankanaab is an eco-park surrounding a lagoon with underwater caverns, home to dolphins, manatees, and sea turtles.

Apart from the water activities, San Miguel also offers excellent dining, with food tours and cooking classes.

Traveling by bus

As there are no direct buses from Cancun to Cozumel, the best option is to hop on an ADO bus that will directly take you to Playa del Carmen, from where you can take a ferry to Cozumel.

Make sure you get down at the 5th Avenue bus station if you are catching the ferry as there are two bus terminals and the bus stops at both.
