How do I get from Cancun to Mahahual?

May 30 , 2022 · 8 min read

If you are in Cancun and want to visit Mahahual, there are several ways to go.

We’ve got the low down on the fastest, cheapest, most comfortable, effortless and luxurious mode of transport you can take to Mahahual from sunny Cancun.

There are plenty of options and whatever way you choose to travel, it will be worth it.

Private Transfer

Private Transfer from Cancun to Mahahual

A private transport service is one of the best ways to go because it is easy, fast and affordable, and you can be picked up from Cancun International Airport or your hotel and taken to your accommodation in Mahahual.

There is no stress and you have the freedom to ask the driver to stop for photos, snacks, or bathroom breaks when you please. The 355 km trip takes about 4.5 hours in normal traffic with minimal stops.

If you are worried about social distancing, a private driver is the best option. If you are landing in Cancun and going straight to Mahahual, your driver will wait for you if there are any flight delays.

They will also know about flight delays, so there is no need to worry about the driver leaving or being unaware of the situation.

Just look for the driver or representative when you exit the airport and there will be someone holding a sign with your name on it.

Most companies have modern vehicles with air conditioning and mod cons to make your trip comfortable and enjoyable.

On the way, your driver will share information about the local area, give you travel advice and might even sing you a song along the way.

Rent A Car

Rent A Car from Cancun to Mahahual

Renting a car from a company based in Cancun or at the airport is a great option if you are a confident driver and wish to make plenty of stops on the way.

Independent travelers who want to be in control of their road trip will find renting a car a great option. The road is straight and in good condition, so you can get lost or find yourself in any tricky driving situations.

You might not even need Google maps to follow the road from Cancun to Mahahual. Highway 307 (Carretera Cancún-Tulum) is a well-maintained four-lane road. It is safe and often patrolled by police.

You can expect to be stopped at a police checkpoint and asked for your documents. They might tell you to watch out for speed bumps that are even on the highway and then send you on your way.

If you are a big group or have lots of luggage, you might need to factor in more for an upgraded vehicle.

Invest in a high level of insurance rather than the cheapest option because accidents can happen anywhere and anytime.

To rent a car in Mexico, you need a valid driver’s license or International Driving Permit (IDP) if your country doesn’t use the Roman alphabet, credit or debit card and be 25 years old or over.

From Mahahual, there are many great day trips like Tulum, Bacalar Lagoon and the epic ruins of Chacchoben. Having a rental car to go sightseeing can be wonderful for the freedom it gives you.

Bus

travel by bus from Cancun to Mahahual

Another option to reach Mahahual from Cancun is taking the bus. There isn’t a direct bus, so there is some effort involved. The ADO bus is the most affordable way to go, but it also takes the longest time.

Depending on how many times it stops, it might take up to 10 hours. You will catch the first bus to Playa del Carmen and then change to a bus bound for Mahahual.

Once at the bus stop in Mahahual, you will need to find a taxi to your hotel. If you have a lot of luggage, have mobility issues, or are traveling with children, the bus might be more hassle than it’s worth.

Paying a bit extra to get there quicker and with less effort might be your best bet. Or you might like to bus one way and get a private transfer back to Cancun if needed.

ADO is the main bus company in Mexico. The ADO bus from Cancun to Playa del Carmen leaves from Cancun Airport about every half hour from early until late.

The ride takes about one hour if there are no traffic delays. This ticket which you can buy from the only bus station on 5th Avenue and Avenida Benito Juarez costs about $216 pesos or $US10.

The next leg from Playa del Carmen takes about five hours, with a stop in Tulum.

Taxi

The cost of a taxi is more expensive than a private transfer. The price varies and might depend on what the driver perceives you will pay, rather than what the regular cost of the trip would be.

There aren’t any meters, so if you do decide to take a taxi, agree on the price before getting inside the vehicle.

If you find a driver offering great service and reasonable prices, be sure to get their business card for trips and tours and on the way back to Cancun if you are going back after seeing Mahahual.

Plane

We hope you feel happy with one of the options for traveling from Cancun to Mahahual. Mahahual is in Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula.

The charming Mexican beach town is located south of Cancun and Tulum and is well worth visiting. It is a quiet place that gets a sudden population boost when cruise ships come into port.

You might like to spend 2-3 days there soaking up the sun on the nice beaches and seeing the sights.

The Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is a must-see UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can go bird watching, swimming, fishing, snorkeling or just walk around the natural surroundings.

Next up check out Fuerte San Felipe, which is hundreds of years old. The fort is an interesting place to explore with views of Lake Bacalar. There are pretty cenotes around with azure-blue water.

You can take a boat ride on the lake and see why it is also called the Seven Color Lagoon. There are Mayan ruins with several well-preserved sites like Chacchoben, Dzibanche, Kohunlich and Kinichna being exceptionally stunning to see and photograph.

The food in Mahahual is wonderful and a little less catered to the tourist palate compared to more touristy places like Cancun and Tulum. Eating authentic local food is a highlight of any trip overseas and Mexico doesn’t disappoint.

The spice level will be the same for you as it would be for a local so if you need a milder version, be sure to tell your waiter.

In the quaint town of Mahahual, there are many great restaurants and also inside resorts and hotels.

You won’t want to miss a meal in Mexico because when you get home, you will be missing the hot flavors as much as you miss the pretty beaches and lush natural surroundings.
